Dealing with Repetitive Behaviors of a Dementia Patient

As a provider of non-medical home care services, here are ways to respond to repetitive behaviors of your dementia patient:

  • Keep your answers brief
It’s easy to respond to an Alzheimer’s patient’s inquiry with a standard response. But in this scenario, keeping it brief and basic works best to save you time and energy.
  • React to the emotions rather than words

When your senior starts repeating something, attempt to guess what emotions are driving the behavior.

For example, if you sense they’re frightened, a gentle hug or hand squeeze may be enough to stop them repeating it.

  • Get away for a while

It’s hard not to lose your temper when you’ve heard something a dozen times. We’re all human, and patience wears thin, especially if it’s happening repeatedly today or for weeks. It’s okay to leave the room for a few minutes. Get some fresh air, or listen to your favorite song. When you return, you’ll have cooled down and be more equipped to handle your older adult’s repetitious behavior.

Keep in mind that your senior isn’t doing it to annoy you. They actually are unaware that they are repeating themselves.
